John 8:31b-32
“If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

Most of us are preparing for a long weekend with the Holiday drawing near. Some of us are making plans to go to the beach, cook-outs, visit relatives, family reunions, or just have some R&R. As American’s we have much to be thankful for and much to celebrate. And as Disciples of Christ we have even greater things to be thankful for and celebrate through praise, namely freedom!

Freedom can be defined as exemption, liberty, or the ability to choose between alternative courses of action. Unfortunately, worlds of people and even some believers are not free today. No, they are not free at all. Sadly, they are imprisoned because of poor choices and bad decisions. Many people are locked in prisons without bars. They are slaves to sin. God says, “He that commits sin is a bond slave of sin.” I hope you know with freedom comes much responsibility. Because you can, doesn’t always mean you should. We all need to realize we are free to do what we please, but we need to make sure what we do – pleases God. Allow me to speak on the Christian’s freedom. Yes, I’m speaking of “The Christian’s Declaration of Independence.” You just read it in our scripture. Jesus said, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Notice, the freedom or absolute truth that makes us free is found in the Person of our Lord Jesus Christ. You will not find absolute truth anywhere else but in God’s Word and in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Word of God is Truth and the Lord intends that we be made free. If you truly know Jesus then you know truth and the truth has made you free. With that said are you free today?
